Councillor Chimbanga speaks out on DPP’s constitutional changes

Councillor for Blantyre City Soche East Ward Leonard Chimbanga has quashed media reports that the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has released report on the party’s constitutional review ahead of next year’s elective conference.

The development follows a rumour that the party has abolished regional vice-presidents, blocked new members from contesting for positions and barred former members, who dumped it, from returning in the new constitution.

In the new constitution, the party has also increased the number of delegates to take part in the elective conference slated for July next year.

But writing on his official facebook page, Chimbanga quashed the rumours.

“It is unfortunate The Nation Newspaper chose to write a story that is not true about DPP purging some positions.

“It’s not clear who they spoke to for them to circulate this propaganda. The truth is the Constitution review process, its findings and solutions will be presented and adopted by the NGC at its next meeting so regard all the misinformation of The Nation Newspaper as mere gossip and propaganda,” wrote Chimgbanga.

On the other hand, Mutharika’s spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba has confirmed of the constitutional changes.

Namalomba further said that the party is yet to make a final position on the proposed changes as the party’s central executive committee and the national governing council are yet to meet to discuss the proposed changes.

Meanwhile, analysts have warned the party to tread carefully on the matter.
